House Cat Faces (Redline)

I need some assistance (that redlineing for my Mewtwo helped a lot by the way, thanks guys!)

But, I get the cat bodies alright, though they still need work, but the faces... I seem to just do my normal lion face then add cat ears and whiskers. So... assistance? Redlining or a quick drawing of a face please?

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...Soul/ClanCats/ - some cats I drew

I'd be really grateful

Don't rely on me, cat's arn't my strong point XD
The only thing that I felt needed change was the muzzle, it seemed a little big (understandable because you're used to drawing lions). When you think about cats, remember how small of a muzzle they have (in fact, I might of drawn mine too big)

Safi's got it with the muzzle. Shorter and rounder -nodnod- I'll try to make you a redline, if you want, but for now I thought some pictures for comparison might help, too.

Cat - http://www.scientific-art.com/GIF%20...cal/Bertie.gif
Lion - http://www.skulls-skeletons.com/cata...0(RS%2085).JPG

Kinda steep, rounded drop-off from the head to the nose instead of a gradual slope like a lion... Uhm. Hope that helps XD You know how awesome I am at explaining things.

I think putting the eyes a lot closer and making them a little more oval might help make them look more 'catty' as well.

And just a red line...

I think you have more dog like tail positions going on. I'd suggest looking at your kitty or kitty pics to see the way the tail hangs down when standing and curls up when they are alert. The way the little bones are in the tail I don't think you'd ever really get an 's' curve going on in profile like that.

Cat tend to have shorter necks and if you look at the hind legs the join is a lot lower. You know cats have that sort of flow from belly to hind legs. The shoulder bump and the actually shoulder are further apart as well. The shoulder is more inline with the belly.

I think you might want to do smaller paws to look more cat like and less dog like. That's a style thing I know but generally cartoon kitties have smallish paws.

I think you just need to get a better grasp on real house cat anatomy and then go back and add your stylish elements.

That picture in perticular I know i messed uo because the entire time I was thinking 'fox' (since her name is foxtail) think that didnt help xD but I see what you mean. and I need to work with the small paws thing. I always have trouble making things small enough cause my mind says "NO! its to small!" :C

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Are those better? I tried two things with the face. the second one I like better...though I was looking at my cat for that one. since shes staring at me all O.O

Edit - im looking at it and the muzzles still seem to large X_x urg

Yeah I think you might want to pinch in the bridge and make it a bit more stubby still. But the eyes closer and weaker chin works much better.
You might still want to bring the ears up a little from the side of the head though.

I know you're focusing on the head here but your tails still aren't following the spine really. No matter what species you're going for that's always a biggie. I have big problem with putting mine too high, I think you're doing the same.

I'd say drop the butt as well. It shouldn't be so much higher than the shoulder bump. I think it's usually lower or basically inline. I think if you get those tails lower and drop the bump of the butt you'll see a big improvement in your hind quarters for lions and kitties.

I still have to kick myself every picture not to put the back leg joint too high and my eyes too far apart. And sometimes I still do.

I think with kitty back legs a lot does go to style once you know how the actual back leg works. Because if you look at even the uber artists on TLK.org who have super awesome perfect Disney style back legs are one thing that's basically unique to each of them.

I was just drawing a house cat for my mom's mother day picture present so I know what you're going through, TUS. xD I found that if you give them slightly "large" eyes and a smaller nose, like the nose itself not jsut the muzzle, it seems to add to the whole House Cat feel.

I dunno.. Just a suggestion, could jsut be me in the end. xD Cats an their peculiar anatomy. Haha.

I usually get decent results with my house cats (since my main character IS one) so I tossed this together real quick- compare my drawings with the photo of Quill, and I stuck Zoe in there for variety

Big eyes and a small nose make all the difference.

I just wanted to point out that sometimes with tomcats (even some neutered males) the jaw will be heavier, almost like a big cat's is. So for your beefier male cats you may want to keep the large chin.
